Street Racing Films: An Addicts Story
This isn’t something I really want to admit, but since I first saw the film “The fast and The Furious,” I have had an addiction to street racing DVDs. I think I have seen pretty much all of them - commercial drag racing DVDs, illegal street car racing DVDs - you name it, I have a seen it or own a copy of it. I just love ‘em. Not only do I consider a street car racing films to be kind of tacky, but often you can see some pretty crazy stuff, like the odd crash, in them. It seems like an awful thing to be entertained by an event for someone getting injured, yet in many of the street racing films this is exactly what happens.
You see, the laws are written so that it is easy to sell an underground street racing DVD. There is some legal liability, but unless the person who films the street racing clip has involvement in the racing event, they are probably going to be safe from prosecution. There are even motorbike racing films, featuring imported racing bikes zooming between vehicles on the road at extremely high speeds. Not only is this dangerous for the motorcycle riders, but also for the other drivers as well. I have even seen street racing films that show innocent pedestrians diving out of the way to avoid the cars!
Nonetheless, there is something about the street racing DVDs that makes it very hard for me to look away. I have tried, but I am addicted. At one point, I even lent all of my street racing DVDs to a friend who lives about 500 miles away. I thought I wouldn’t miss them until I saw him again in a couple months, but surprisingly I found myself driving over to him in the middle of the night to get them back. I even managed to get myself into a street drag race the other day with some jerk who was revving his engine at me. Although I know it is not wise to mimic the street racing films, there is something about it that makes it hard to resist. It is so exciting, dangerous, and flashy.
If you have never looked at street racing DVDs, I would recommend that you do not start to. Maybe it’s just me - perhaps there isn’t anything really addictive about them. Even so, it probably isn't worth risking it. They will definitely leave you with an uneasy feeling, even if they are exciting to watch.
