Periodic maintenance on your car will save you tremendous hassle in the long run. Your vehicle should last longer and command a higher resale price, too! I made it a point to get my car serviced according to the dealer's schedule, and when I traded it in, I got far more than I expected due to the stellar condition of the engine.

Now I know this isn't bedtime reading, but the owner's manual can be your best friend - assuming you read it! At least take a look-through periodically. How about while you're waiting to get your oil changed?

Your vehicle should be serviced at the intervals recommended by the manufacturer to avoid any major problems while out on the road.

Have the air conditioning system looked over by a qualified technician. A check up here can save you a huge bill later.

One of the biggest problem for cars in the summer months is overheating.  You can make sure this doesn't happen to you by checking that your cooling system is flushed and refilled properly.

Have your mechanic check all of the belts and hoses for wear and tear.  This task can be quickly done and repairs or replacements should not cost very much.

Change your oil and oil filter every 3,000 miles or four times a year.

Fuel and air filters should be regularly changed.

Make sure your windscreen washer fluid is replaced as you may have used most of it during the winter.

Tires should be rotated every 5000 miles or so.

Your spare tire must by checked.  Ensure it is inflated properly and is in good condition.  Also check that you have sufficient tools to change it!

If you get a broken transmission, it can translate into a very large hole in your pocket.  Repairs are expensive but can be avoided with regular servicing.

If you notice that your brakes are less efficient, get them checked out right away.

Have your car battery inspected for life expectancy during the service.

Periodically inspect all the vehicle's lights to ensure that they are functioning properly.

Carry a first aid kit, flares, jumper cables, a flashlight, and a cell phone.

There are some easy step that you can take to keep your car running smoothly during the summer.

These check don't take very long, perhaps half an hour every month, but can ensure your car keep running properly for years to come.
