The Pocket PC Generation

At the time when I was at college, PDA's were the new thing out. No one was calling them pocket PCs at that point, but that is what they were. Back then, it seemed like fad that would pass. A pocket pc was as convenient as s pocket organizer, but there were few issues. It wasn’t cheap for a start, it broke easily, and less intuitive than using a personal organizer with paper. To add to this, others who were foolish enough to buy a personal digital organizer were often the targets of theft.
Nowadays, things are very different. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have some sort of Bluetooth pocket pc. And nearly all youngsters have an electronic organizer, which to me, doesn’t make very much sense. After all, how much information does your average school kid really have to keep track of?  Homework? I don’t think so. But that doesn’t stop many of them spending more than $200 for a pocket pc or cell phone or portable game station.

On the other hand, maybe things haven’t really changed that much at all.  Now, as then, the pocket pc has turned out to be more of a status symbol than a useful tool for organizing personal information. Many tech heads rightly point out that digital technology gives us the ability to more efficiently store and organize data, but they miss the fact that most of us haven’t that much information to store and organize. The small amount of appointments and dates that the majority of us need to remember can quite effectively be kept on paper. With paper, you have a more visceral, hands on approach. It can be taken anywhere, modified however you want, and easily and cheaply replaced.

Don't get me wrong - computers are very useful. Even the pocket pc is indispensable for some people. If you are the type of character who has to have a very organized life, planned out to the minute, a pocket pc is definitely the right way to go. Still, I reckon that if it ain’t broken, then don’t try to fix it. Pen and paper has been in use for a very long time now, and has been extremely successful. You can keep your shiny new pocket digital organizer. I'll take my battered old notebook any day.
