My Music Production Software
I have been messing around with music production software ever since I downloaded a free trial version of this program, it was called Cool Edit, way back in secondary school. It was kind of quirky, but I really loved it. I suddenly had a powerful tool in my hands that allowed me to do all manner of musical things, stuff that I had never thought was possible. I could synthesize my own voices and noises, give them different ambiences and effects, layer multiple tracks one on top of another, play music backwards - you name it. By today's standards of music production software, it wasn't that powerful, but at the time it, I thought it was amazing.
Producing music was a dream of mine back then. I even toyed with going to college to study music, so I could eventually have a career in the industry. One of my brothers was in the music business as a singer and musician in San Francisco. Although he wasn't really making a career out of it, he did have a nice tidy income from playing the guitar a couple of nights a week at a local bar. I did not have the skills to be a musician, but I did have an ear for music. I could take a good track and make it better - an important skill for a music producer.
I decided to purchase some serious music production software about the time I left high school. I tried to be smart about it. Now, the technology wasn't quite up to what it is today, but I still knew that music production programs were the direction things were going. Buying racks and racks of studio equipment was way too expensive - particularly for an amateur sound recording engineer like me. The software for music production cost several hundred dollars, but serious production equipment could run into the tens of thousands of dollars.
What I didn't realize is that there are a huge amount of different types of music production software, all producing different results. A typical music production program could run anywhere from 50 dollars to 500, depending on the features. Some were basically music recording and mixing programs, designed to do multiple tracks and clean up the sound quality. Others were designed for electronic music recording artists. They had music sampling, advanced effects, and MIDI capabilities. I slowly came to the realization that if you wanted to be a recording engineer, you needed to have an all singing and dancing version of everything. You could not very well have someone come into your studio and not able to access the equipment he needed, so I decided to learn all of it.
