Below are a list of tips that I have put together to help avoid a nasty virus.
1. Purchase and install a well respected antivirus software program and be sure to set it up so that it automatically runs when the computer starts up each time.
2. This anti virus software must be kept up to date. You can do this by checking manually on a weekly basis, or some software can do this automatically for you.
3. The antivirus software can also scan for Macro Viruses. This type of virus is usually hidden in word processing documents that you may receive in an email.
4. You should only download software from the internet if it is really neccessary. There maybe some great programs available online, but there are also many viruses too.
5. Tansfering data between storage devices like usb drives and discs, should only be done if really neccessary and they should be scanned for viruses before you install the data onto your machine.
6. If using floppy disks to transfer data make sure to format them before using them for the first time.
7. When purchasing software make sure to only buy from vendors that are well known and from ones you trust.
One of the most common ways of catching a virus is to install pirate software. This is illegal and should never be done.
9. If you must download programs from the internet ALWAYS scan them for viruses BEFORE opening them up to install on your computer.
10. One very important task is to back your computer files regularly. This will ensure that if, after all your prevention measures, you do still catch a virus it can be removed, and the lost files can be replaced with the ones that were saved.
I can't guarantee that if you follow the step that I advise, you won't get a computer virus, I can promise you that it will be a less likely occurence by far.
